The Evolution of Blackboard
Blackboard has always been about one thing: helping educators do what they do best.
Since 1997, that has meant building the infrastructure that makes teaching and learning possible, online and in person, at scale. It has meant showing up for millions of students and tens of thousands of faculty and administrators across nearly 75 countries. It has meant adapting, alongside the institutions we serve, through every shift in how education happens, from the rise of online learning, to the shift to mobile, to the explosion of digital content, to where we are now with artificial intelligence.
Today, we are sharing what that evolution looks like next.

We have updated our look and feel to better reflect who we are right now. A clearer, more direct expression of the values that have always been true of this organization: grounded in education, honest about what works, and genuinely committed to the people who show up to teach and learn every day. You will see it across the website and at Building Blackboard Together next week.
But what it represents matters more than what it looks like.
Every day, educators, instructional designers, administrators, and institutional leaders do remarkable things. They create learning experiences that change lives. Too often, the conversation in this industry becomes about the technology itself. We think the spotlight belongs elsewhere. On the faculty. The staff. The students. That has not changed. What has changed is our ability to deliver on it.
We emerged this year as an independent company, focused entirely on teaching and learning. The institutions we serve are navigating real pressure: shifting student expectations, rapid changes in technology, tighter budgets, and the growing complexity of hybrid and online delivery. Our job is to make sure the platform and the support are strong enough that those challenges become manageable.
As education continues to evolve, so will Blackboard. We will continue investing in innovation that serves educators, using AI to improve learning experiences, expanding accessibility so learning reaches everyone and in all ways, and helping institutional leaders demonstrate learning outcomes.
We invite you to explore the updated website and, if you are joining us in Dallas next week, to experience it firsthand at Building Blackboard Together 2026. It is where educators, institutional leaders, partners, and innovators from around the world come together to share ideas, explore new possibilities, and shape what is next in education.
After all these years, we are still in it with you.
