AI, Video, and Usability: Highlights from the Blackboard LMS July 2026 release
Though July is often regarded as a quieter month for higher ed, it’s quite the opposite here at Blackboard HQ. While students head off for a well-deserved break, conveniently timed to coincide with the World Cup, we’re charging full steam ahead towards our Building Blackboard Together user conference in Dallas, where innovation in the Blackboard LMS will hold center stage.
The July 2026 release keeps the momentum going. Here are five key updates that will prove a hit on your campus, spanning AI, usability, insights, and video.
Time Limits for the AI Conversation tool
Blackboard’s exclusive AI Conversation tool continues to set the standard for practical learning in a digital environment. It has now been used by more than 317,000 students around the world, while becoming a staple at leading institutions like the University of South Carolina.
We’ve updated the AI Conversation to provide extra control for instructors. The July 2026 release adds time limits to complement the recent addition of message limits, allowing instructors to set tighter parameters and ensure the conversation stays on subject. Time limits can either be applied across the full exercise with the reflection question included, or exclusively for the conversation component. In either case, the student has full visibility on the time remaining as they proceed through the task.

Course Switcher Enhancements
The January Blackboard LMS release brought significant changes to system navigation, including the launch of full-screen course view. These updates made an immediate impact on the student experience, driving fewer clicks, fewer journeys back to the courses page, and more time learning.
The Course Switcher is a fundamental part of this enhanced experience. It allows students to easily pass between courses without leaving the course view, and we’ve seen it widely adopted since release. This month we’ve added a Favorites tab to the Course Switcher, where students can save their most accessed courses and navigate directly to them when required.

Observer Access for Course Announcements
Another area of ongoing optimization within Blackboard LMS is course announcements. Last month we released a new Announcements tab on the Student Overview page, empowering instructors with increased visibility on which of their students have read important communications related to their course.
The July release extends this insight to Observers. Understanding which students are engaging with course announcements is crucial to their role also, and moving forward they will have full transparency on what information has been sent, which students engaged, and when they did so.

Extended Video Recording Duration
As the breadth of use cases for multimedia content grows, we’re seeing increased demand for longer video recording in the LMS. July’s Blackboard release answers the call, providing extended duration for video recordings in both core and premium workflows.
- Premium (Video Studio): Students and instructors can record videos up to 30 minutes
- Core (Blackboard LMS): Instructors can record videos up to 10 minutes
These updates will happen automatically, with no activation requirements for administrators.
Video Studio: Record Video in More Places in the Blackboard App
Finally, another important video update – and another area where we’ve made iterative improvements in recent releases. The June release saw the addition of video recording in the Blackboard LMS mobile app; July now extends this functionality to all workflows that use the Content Editor, for both instructors and students.
Users can now record video on their phone in the following key workflows:
- Discussions
- Assignments
- Tests
- Other areas that use the Content Editor
The experience is consistent across devices and saved videos can be accessed later within supported locations.
