U.S. Foreign Military Program Chooses Blackboard to Support the Security Training of Partner Nations

Next-Generation Training Environment Provides Online, Social and Mobile Learning Solutions

WASHINGTON – May 28, 2014

Blackboard’s teaching and learning solutions are now a part of the U.S. Foreign Military Sales (FMS) program, the company announced today. Through the support of the U.S. Navy Space and Naval Warfare Systems Center Atlantic, the company’s next-generation training tools can be offered to countries and international organizations all over the world to train security personnel.

FMS is a form of security assistance where the U.S. government sells defense articles and services to countries and international organizations in an effort to strengthen the security of the U.S. and promote world peace. The Ministry of Defense of Colombia, which includes the Police Department, Army, Navy and Air Force of Colombia, is the first international entity to leverage Blackboard’s solutions through the program to train nearly 60,000 soldiers.

"Our main focus is keeping our nation safe and identifying partners to help us meet this mission," said Colonel Sarmiento with the Ministry of Defense of Colombia. "We wanted to partner with a leader in the training space that can help us launch and sustain effective and scalable online training programs. Blackboard was the obvious choice."

Blackboard’s solutions will provide military learners with next-generation online, social and mobile tools that create a continuous learning environment built around peer-to-peer interaction, content and discussions. This allows soldiers in the field to pull information pertinent to in-theater situations, ensuring they receive immediate access to the latest training content. Extending far beyond a traditional learning management system, the environment facilitates virtual classes through unlimited Web conferencing and allows for mobile access to course content so learners can create and view important information from their personal devices.

"The tools required to wage a successful campaign need to be highly sophisticated and rely on innovative technology at unprecedented levels," said Maurice Heiblum, senior vice president of the higher education, corporate and government markets for Blackboard. "We are thrilled to be a part of the U.S. FMS program to positively impact speed-to-competency for soldiers in partnering countries around the world and help better prepare them for the realties they are facing in the field today and tomorrow."
