MobilEdu began when a group of students from Stanford University started thinking about ways to engage their fellow students and faculty in a powerful and mobile way. After all, this was a group accessing campus maps, directories, and course catalogues every day. Simply put, they wanted to take all of those things and put them in their pockets – on their iPhone® mobile devices.

This vision became a reality in 2007 in the form of Terriblyclever Design, LLC. Working with Stanford University as its first client, Terriblyclever soon conceptualized a nascent version of MobilEdu, named iStanford. Further iterations of MobilEdu followed and quickly became the category-defining suite of mobile Web applications for education.

In July 2009, Blackboard acquired Terriblyclever and added MobilEdu to the family of Blackboard solutions.  We were fortunate to bring the team of mobile development experts who built MobilEdu onboard.  Together, we’ve since been weaving this new solution into our organization and fleshing out a vision for bringing more parts of the education experience together on the mobile devices we all increasingly rely on.

The result of that work is our newest platform, Blackboard Mobile which will help institutions bring more information students want to the mobile devices they want to use most, starting with the first module in the platform, Mobile Central (formerly MobilEdu).  Available now and already in use at nearly 60 institutions in K-12 and Higher Education, Mobile Central allows your institution to put many of its campus resources directly in the hands of your students including course catalogs, maps, a student directory, and campus news.
