About Cookies

A cookie is a file issued from a issued from a website, Internet based application or Internet delivered content to a end user’s connected device (e.g. web browser, smartphone, etc).  Cookies may be used to uniquely identify a user and they may be used to track individual preferences and other information about a web user. Blackboard products use this technology to provide secure learning experiences, track usage and manage application performance.  Third party content may be embedded on pages within Blackboard products.  This third party content may include cookies from the content issuer. A visitor connecting to the website that hosts this product will be issued cookies that are strictly necessary for security and application performance.  This product will provide the user with a dialogue box which informs the user that the cookie is being set and obtains the users consent to the cookie .   After the user has reviewed the notice and accepted the cookie, the user may continue to use the software product.   The user may not use the product without accepting the cookies.

USER		 SafeAssign™ is a plagiarism prevention service, offered by Blackboard to its Blackboard Learning System Enterprise, Vista Enterprise and CE Enterprise clients.  This service helps educators prevent plagiarism by detecting unoriginal content in student papers.  In addition to acting as a plagiarism deterrent, it also has features designed to aid in educating students about plagiarism and importance of proper attribution of any borrowed content. 

 

The service requires the following information to be stored and tracked:
•Email
•First name
•Last name
•Role (if someone is a student or an instructor)
•User bbid (internal blackboard unique identifier for a user)
•Institution
•Course List (for instructors only, list of courses that are taught)
•PID (SafeAssign specific ID - written into the the PID column in the C_USER table)
•Skin (The skin defines what CSS and graphic images are used for a particular user and where they are should be retrieved from. There are 2 skins: default and sapl (for Powerlink users).  SkinServlet fetches graphic files depending on the skin of a user.
•Submitted papers
•Feedback (from the grader)

Weather Module See Weather.com for details The weather module may be made available or selected by students within a Community Tab pages.  This module contains a remote image that sets cookies for tracking usage.  This information may be combined with other visits to Weather.com.  A user may fill out a web form that directs to Weather.com.  This form will disclose and store Zip code and location information to Weather.com Weather.com
YouTube Mashup See Google Privacy Policies YouTube may track users based on Flash cookies.  Viewing pages containing YouTube videos will result in tracking by YouTube subject to Google privacy policies including the page which contained the YouTube Video Google & Google.com

This application stores user preferences and/or personal information on the terminal device or computer that accesses this product.

Session & Login Information This application stores your user session locally in a browser cookie (noted above).  This cookie persists until you log out of the Blackboard Learn application. If you fail to log out of the Blackboard Learn application and leave the terminal device without closing the entire browser application, this information could be used by other users of the same terminal device or computer. Log out of the Blackboard Learn Application. 

Users Preferences and Personal Information Stored On the Remote Server Supporting this Application

User Directory Information     System Administrators may disable the user directory tool. 
End Users may modify the information disclosed from with in the options under “Personal Information”
Course Roster     System administrators and instructors may disable the course roster tool from individual courses or the entire Blackboard Learn application. 
User Contributed Materials Tests, Discussion Board Postings, Assignments, and other materials uploaded to the software Information may be shared with instructors, other course members and guests to the course consistent with the individual configuration settings of the course and instructor.

Tracking of Activities and Usage

This software monitors your usage as your interact with it.  This information is collected and shared consistent with the privacy policies noted above.    The laws governing such a disclosure vary, depending on where the server is stored and the application is being used. You are advised to consult counsel of our choice regarding applicable laws and regulations.  Blackboard may attempt to limit the disclosure of this information consistent with Blackboard’s legal advice and our privacy policies.
