Gary Lang is senior vice president of product development for Blackboard. He has more than 20 years of experience in the delivery of large complex products and systems and in the architectural design and direction-setting for high-revenue software projects. He balances executive-level decision making and hands-on software development, ranging from high-level prototyping down to basic device driver implementation.
Previously Gary was executive vice president of products for MarkLogic, which counted Warner Brothers, Dow Jones, United States Department of Defense, and the Library of Congress among the clients of its operational big data (multi-PB) applications.
Gary came to MarkLogic from Microsoft, where he was a leader in the development of the Visual Studio, .NET, and the .NET language teams. Prior to Microsoft, Gary was vice president of platforms and global engineering at Autodesk. At Autodesk, he led an organization of 1,200 employees worldwide that provided platform and product engineering for Autodesk’s core products as well as new software and services for emerging businesses. His organization was responsible for developing code for almost all of Autodesk’s desktop and SaaS products, such as AutoCAD, Inventor, and Seek. During this period, Gary also served as the vice president of global engineering for the company and managed its offices in China and Singapore.
Prior experience includes a principal role at Ensis LLC, which included executive engineering roles building an early Siri-like service for General Magic, WebQuicken for Intuit, and Currenex, the first foreign exchange system on the Internet.
Gary has a bachelor’s degree in computer and information science from the University of California (UC), Santa Cruz. He has also done graduate studies in artificial intelligence, VLSI design, and software economics at UC Irvine and UC Santa Cruz.
